Ski Towns Becoming Increasingly In-Demand for Second Homes

The pandemic has resulted in some interesting home trends, and one trend that has emerged is that people are searching for second homes that are within driving distance of their primary residence. Home searches in U.S. ski towns increased close to 36% in the fourth quarter of 2020, compared to the same time the prior year, according to a report from realtor.com.

The pandemic has some buyers—so-called snowbirds from northern climes who escape to states like Florida or Arizona during the winter—looking for destinations within a drivable distance.

In addition, the report looked at the search activity of potential buyers from 10 markets with a large population of snowbirds.

Eight of those locations, including New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and Minneapolis, together saw a 44.5% year-over-year increase in views of ski towns in the fourth quarter of 2020, the data showed. Since skiing is done outdoors and typically at a distance, this is a relatively safe sport during this time. And frequently, these locations offer incredible year-round activities making them excellent summer getaways as well.
